A New Strategy for Success: Hospitality & Beyond Program

In 2019, Boston Career Connections will continue delivering a comprehensive, coordinated point-of-entry into the hospitality industry for adults in the East Boston Community.  By partnering with Maverick Landing Community Services and using a model that includes existing best-practices, there is great potential for this pipeline to quickly result in impact and scale.

For each 6-week program session, BCC recruits 20-25 adults, ages 18+, who are motivated to work towards excellence.  The program seeks to attract people in Boston’s diverse neighborhoods, who have not found stable work or who wish to begin a career in an industry where they’ll have opportunity to grow and advance.  The model is a blend of program components that research has shown effective in helping participants attain employment and long-term independence.  These components are provided to participants by our highly-qualified staff and through various community partnerships.

BCC Model

BCC’s Hospitality & Beyond Program includes the following:

Training (6 weeks):
-Job readiness
-Resume writingIMG_0436
-Computer skills
-Job search skills
-Interview practice
-Intro to the hospitality industry
-Customer service
-Advanced communication
-Guest speakers

Post-training follow-up:
-Personal career coaching
-Alumni communications and connections to employers

Method & Outcomes:

Instructors use lectures combined with participant-centered activities. Activities are designed taking into account participants’ learning styles.  Participants work individually and in large and small groups, in the classroom and in the computer lab.  There are industry guest speakers, and participants have opportunities to participate in hotel tours.  The training includes mock interview days and participants receive regular feedback.

Boston Career Connections provides support, every step of the way. Participants are connected to any needed services through provider networks while in the program, and all participants receive follow-up career coaching services.Capturea

Our goal is for participants to be ready for full-time employment in an entry-level, front-of-house hospitality role after having completed the training, and to offer them ongoing support.

By the end of the Hospitality & Beyond Program, participants have refined their customer service skills, know exactly where their aptitudes can be applied in a hospitality environment, and are actively managing their own job search process.  BCC will continue to provide additional training opportunities and direct connections to employers, while marketing the program in order to build an employer-recognized, skilled labor pool, ultimately helping more Boston residents to find long-term careers and achieve financial stability.

DID YOU KNOW?

Many industries in Boston are expanding, and employers need to connect with dedicated adults, who are ready to learn and grow into roles as skilled workers and managers.  One industry in particular stands out due to its projected growth and diverse offering of career paths: the hospitality industry.

  • Over the next five years, Boston’s hospitality industry will grow by over 40%;
  • Boston-area hotels will need to fill over 3,000 new jobs, in everything from food and beverage services, to housekeeping, to guest services and management;
  • 1,000 – 2,000 current industry employees are nearing retirement;
  • Local employers report having trouble finding reliable, properly trained workers;
  • The hospitality industry not only provides jobs, but stable a career path with starting wages upward of $16/hour plus full benefits.
  • About 45% of all jobs, many in the hospitality sector, are classified as middle-skill, requiring no or less than two years of college education, but only 32% of Massachusetts’ workers have the training required to fill these positions.

Employers

Boston Career Connections' Hospitality and Beyond Program is looking to partner with local hotels in 2019, who can offer guest speakers and job shadowing experiences in return for qualified and committed future candidates!
